The M4 is a long road: from Chiswick in west London, past Heathrow, Reading, Swindon and Bristol, over the Severn and on through Newport, Cardiff and Swansea to Pont Abraham. These maps break it into seven sections, so you can look closely at the part you actually drive.

The road is coloured by the live traffic flow speed from National Highways’ data, checked every five minutes: green is 50 mph or more, amber 30 to 49 mph, red under 30 mph, and blue where there is no live reading, which includes the whole of the M4 in Wales. Choose westbound or eastbound above the map.

Each section has its own page with a detailed map, the junctions in order and the towns either side. The four English sections show live speeds; the three in Wales show the road, the junctions and the towns, and live speeds will follow.
